Skateboard Painting

Here's a skateboard that I just finished painting for the "On Deck" gallery show to support the Montana Skatepark Association. I'm really excited to be a part of the show, previous years have included some artists who I really admire, so it's nice to be in good company. They sent me the deck and took care of the shipping so all I had to do was think of something cool to put on it. Been a while since I used acrylic paint, and remembered that it can be frustrating at times, but I'm happy with the finished product.

"The Wrong Light" Video

Here's a video I just finished for Kasey Anderson in promotion of his new album "Heart of a Dog". This was my first experience with any kind of animation, so I tried to keep it simple, with just moving images rather than fully animated characters. Still, as you can see below, any time you're dealing with animation it ends up being a lot of work for only a few seconds of screen time. I can't complain, it's exciting to try out new things. Hopefully I'll have some more animations to show here in the future.

I just finished this up for Kasey Anderson's new album "Heart of a Dog", and I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. It comes out in early 2011, but you'll be able to get a copy directly from HIS WEBSITE on Dec 14th. It'll be available on CD and Record, as well as digitally. I will say that I'm just as guilty as everyone else for buying albums on itunes, but I do try and support local and independent bands by buying their physical CD's. It makes me sad to think that at some point the concept of holding the physical artwork in your hands while listening to an album will be gone. I tried my best to create something that would make it worth the "inconvenience" of buying a CD. I hope people like it, and I would encourage everyone to check out Kasey's music. The man is amazingly talented.

Had some paper laying around that I'm gonna do a larger painting on, but wanted to make sure it could handle washes of watercolor and gouache, so I did a test painting on a strip of it. This is what came out. Seemed to work okay.

Yesterday I got asked to do another illustration for the Willamette Week. However, they were down to the wire with the printer so I had to have it done in a few hours. I actually don't mind doing quick work sometimes, there's something satisfying about sending off an illustration at the end of the day and seeing it in print the next morning.

This is a quick drawing that I made for a Threadless design competition about Mustaches. Start to finish took me a couple hours. Kinda rough around the edges, but I'm glad that I'm getting to a point where I can create something that quick. I was really just trying to get some interesting lighting on this one. I've been doing caricatures at a few events around Portland, that's definitely helped speed up my process.

Anyways, this guy still makes me laugh, maybe because when I finished he ended up looking like a 12 year old kid with a giant mustache.

Illustration Academy Life Drawings

I was fortunate enough to be offered a free week at the Illustration Academy this past week, so I've just returned from Richmond, VA. The course runs for 4 weeks, but my schedule would only allow me to stay for the one week. Amazing people over there, really inspiring company to be surrounded by. Here are a few of the life drawings I did while I was there. They're pastel on colored paper, it's a very specific style of drawing that they teach. Once you learn to deal with some lack of control, it's pretty fun.

This is an illustration I just did for the Willamette Week, it went with a piece on a local stand-up comic competition. The idea was to portray all 5 finalists in a "Mortal Kombat" style, with the caricatures based on their likeness as well as their answers to the video game profile questions. This was pretty fun to do, got to go wild with some of the costumes. See if you can spot which character's finishing move is the "Roadhouse Throat-Rip"....that was my favorite.
