Yeah, it's a painting of shoes and a mug.

The assignment was to paint a picture of shoes, and it had to include some sort of fabric and some kind of shiny object. This is what I ended up with. I would have loved to do something really creative with it, but it ended up kind of boring. I don't know, it's shoes.

the figure part 2

Some more sketches from figure drawing class......I seem to draw the nude figure alot lately.

a hazy painting

This was done for painting class earlier this semester, I was sick for part of the time we were working on it so I can't help but feel it would have turned out better if I spent more time on it. I know I could still go into it and work on it more, but now I'm focused on other projects. I still like it ok though.

Gestures

Deadlines, frustration, and furry woodland creatures

My graphic novel class pisses me off sometimes. I feel like with most of our assignments the deadlines are insanely quick, so if i want to do anything with any detail or substance I'm pretty much screwed. That said, for one of the assignments I decided to do something quick and cartoony that vented my frustration, and you can tell it was done quick too. I'm not happy with the artwork really, it reminds me of stuff I did in jr. high, but it makes me laugh so I thought I'd put it up here.

Intermediate Illustration part 2

This is the latest project I did for class, I used the same process that I used for the coal miner project but tried to get more detail out of it. I'm fairly happy with it, it's definitely getting closer to what I'd like to do with illustration, it's fast enough that I can create it on a deadline but hopefully has some similarities to traditional painting.

Battle Figures

So the teacher for my figure drawing class likes to read to us while we draw, and for the last couple of months we've been on a history book that recounts the day to day life of the middle ages in graphic detail. So sometimes he likes to bring in models with props, for these he had the model pose gestures with a sword and create battle/dying scenes. Oh and the little animal on the top image was drawn from life, they brought in a stuffed squirrel to pose with. Ah, art school.

Life Drawing - The Figure

These are a few of the figure drawings I've done for class in the last month. The poses vary in length from ten minutes to an hour.

Not really related to art

Well, I guess it kind of is. I don't know why I feel the need to write this, it just seems like something people do with blogs. So a few weeks ago I watched the movie Half Nelson, with medium expectations. I've been pretty frustrated with a lot of movies lately, especially the ones I watch on dvd for some reason. The only movies that I'd really enjoyed in the last 6 months were ones I saw in the theater, and they were usually films that were designed to be experienced on the big screen (The Fountain, Children Of Men) So I set out to watch Half Nelson expecting it to turn out like almost all other movies I see on dvd, with a *shrug* and a "...meh...". But here's the thing:

Half Nelson is absolutely brilliant. Brilliant.

I actually ended up buying it because I couldn't get it out of my head, and since then I've watched it a few times and it still floors me. I actually don't expect everyone to agree with me, and it does seem a bit disturbing that I connect so much with such a fucked up storyline, especially since it doesn't relate all that much to my own experience. I can't really put my finger on what makes it so amazing, it has flawless acting, interesting cinematography(mostly handheld which pisses some people off but I don't mind), and the soundtrack is great. I think the main thing though is that it has unbelievably honest emotion.

Anyways, I highly recommend it. That's all.

Intermediate Illustration

This is an illustration I did for class last month about generations of coal miners, I was playing around on photoshop for the finished product. I'm not crazy about it, maybe because it feels too cartoony, but it has a few things that work okay.

Mary Pickford

A painting I did for The Pickford Cinema in Bellingham.
